In many developing countries, plastic waste pickers play a crucial yet often underappreciated role in managing waste and recycling materials. Despite their significant contribution to environmental sustainability, waste pickers face numerous challenges, including poor working conditions, low income, and lack of social security. Recognizing this, Environment360, an innovative company dedicated to sustainable plastic waste management, launched a series of value-added services aimed at improving the livelihoods and working conditions of plastic waste pickers.
Environment360 has established direct purchasing stations in Tema Newtown, Kumasi-Asafo, and Dodowa where waste pickers could sell their collected plastic waste at fair prices, ensuring a better and more stable income. By eliminating intermediaries, waste pickers receive more for their collected plastic, significantly enhancing their earnings and financial stability. The organization holds quarterly award ceremonies for waste pickers with award categories such as Highest Collector, Community Star, and Most Consistent Waste Picker.
Environment360 provides comprehensive health and safety training, equipping waste pickers with knowledge on proper waste handling, the use of protective gear, and access to healthcare. This training has led to a reduction in work-related injuries and illnesses, creating a safer working environment for over 100 waste pickers. The organization also pays for the registration of waste pickers and their loved ones under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) provided by the government. Over 70 waste pickers and their families have benefited from improved healthcare access, resulting in better overall health and well-being.

Financial literacy workshops and savings programs were introduced to help waste pickers manage their earnings more effectively and save for the future. Over 70% of participants reported improved financial management skills, with many starting savings accounts and planning for long-term financial goals.

Environment360 provides childcare and educational support to children of waste pickers who qualify by hitting a specific collection target, ensuring access to quality education and the general upkeep of their children. Over 20 children have benefited from this initiative, breaking the cycle of poverty and enabling them to pursue a brighter future.
The organization educates waste pickers and community members on child labour sensitization. This knowledge helps waste pickers to be activists against child labour and helps them identify cases to be reported to the right channels.
Environment360’s value-added services have not only improved the economic stability and health of plastic waste pickers but have also empowered them with knowledge, skills, and opportunities for a better future. By addressing their immediate needs and investing in their long-term development, Environment360 has transformed the lives of countless individuals and families, creating a ripple effect of positive change in the community.
