The Circular Innovation Hub, graduated the inaugural Empower Up ‘N’ Around class on the 16th of September, 2022. The program, is the first training part of a training series, which moves women waste pickers from collectors into small scale recyclers.
The Circular Innovation Hub is the first of its kind in Ghana. It closes the loop locally on plastics by strengthening the demand for recycled products. To achieve this, the Hub first identifies items within a business’ value chain it can substitute with recycled plastic. After a product has been identified, the Hub works with the business to prototype and test the product. The business, after testing, approves the prototype and moves into full scale production; assigning subcontracts to Hub graduates. Graduates from the Hub have access to low interest finance schemes to purchase machines based on the value of their subcontract.
The first class of graduates is working with Ghana Bamboo Bikes to prototype a grip for their handlebars.
In February, graduates move into a six (6) months Tech-Know program. In this program, women learn to operate and service the modular recycling machines.
The Hub seeks to train 100 women waste pickers over the next five years to create 1,000 green jobs and recycle 200 tons of plastics each year.
