Accra and Kumasi

GIZ, the German Technical Development Agency, through funding from North Rhine-Westphalia, is supporting the reduction of plastic litter in Accra and Kumasi by funding a take back scheme for  PET by the informal sector.

The project seeks to encourage the formation of associations to collect PET, while also strengthening an existing association in Kumasi to diversify their income stream through the collection of plastic.

Through this project, informal workers receive leadership training, support in organizing and capacity training to help them build agency and self confidence.

The project also seeks to set up community collection stations in key vantage points where waste pickers can easily transport and sell the materials they have collected.
